Extender Pigments & Fillers for Paints & Coatings

Overview

The paint and coatings industry is the largest consumer of mineral extender pigments globally. Raviraj Minerals supplies calcium carbonate, dolomite, talc, and kaolin as functional extenders for architectural emulsion paints, industrial coatings, anti-corrosion primers, and decorative finishes — helping paint formulators optimize opacity, scrub resistance, film build, and application cost.

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate (calcite) is the most important extender pigment in paint formulation. Raviraj Minerals supplies a comprehensive range from coarsely ground filler grades (for economy emulsion paints) to ultra-fine, high-brightness grades for premium architectural coatings and industrial finishes.

In interior emulsion paints, CaCO₃ contributes to hiding power at high PVC (Pigment Volume Concentration), controls sheen level, and enables formulators to reduce expensive TiO₂ pigment loading while maintaining the required opacity.

  • Extends TiO₂ — reduces expensive pigment usage while maintaining opacity
  • Controls sheen and gloss level in emulsion and enamel paints
  • Improves scrub resistance and wet abrasion resistance of paint films
  • Improves brushability, rollability, and application smoothness
  • Available in a full range from economy filler grades to ultra-fine premium grades

Talc Powder

Talc in paints and coatings functions as an anti-settling agent, matting agent, and barrier filler. Its plate-like morphology creates an overlapping barrier structure in the dried paint film that improves weathering resistance, reduces moisture vapor transmission, and decreases the rate of corrosion in anti-corrosion primers.

  • Anti-corrosion barrier in industrial primers and marine coatings
  • Matting agent in semi-gloss and matte architectural finishes
  • Prevents pigment settling during storage of liquid paints
  • Improves sag resistance in thick-applied industrial coatings
  • Enhances wet scrub and burnish resistance in emulsion paints

Dolomite Powder

Dolomite powder is used in economy emulsion paints and textured finishes as a cost-effective white extender. Its slightly higher hardness compared to calcite contributes to improved scrub resistance in washable paint formulations.

  • White extender in economy and value-range emulsion paints
  • Slightly higher hardness improves scrub resistance of paint films
  • Used in textured wall paints and exterior masonry coatings
  • Cost-effective formulation ingredient with good brightness and whiteness

Kaolin / China Clay

Kaolin is used in paints and coatings both as a functional extender and as a rheological modifier. Its plate-like morphology improves paint suspension stability, reduces mud cracking in thick-film applications, and improves the hiding efficiency of TiO₂ by optimizing spatial separation of pigment particles.

  • Improves TiO₂ hiding efficiency through optimized particle spacing
  • Functional extender in interior and exterior emulsion paints
  • Improves paint storage stability and reduces hard settling
  • Reduces mud cracking in high-build and textured coating applications
