Specialty Minerals for Oil & Gas Drilling
Overview
The oil and gas industry uses specialty mineral products in drilling fluid formulations (mud) to control wellbore pressure, seal lost-circulation zones, and protect formation integrity. Raviraj Minerals supplies API-specification calcium carbonate and dolomite grades engineered for use in water-based, oil-based, and synthetic drilling fluid systems.
Calcium Carbonate
Acid-soluble calcium carbonate is the preferred bridging and weighting material in drill-in fluids and completion fluids used when drilling into producing reservoirs. Unlike barite or bentonite, CaCO₃ is soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid, allowing easy cleanup of filter cake from the formation face after drilling, thus maximizing well productivity.
Raviraj Minerals supplies CaCO₃ in multiple particle size grades (fine, medium, and coarse) to provide progressively graduated bridging across different formation pore-throat sizes.
- Acid-soluble — enables complete filter cake cleanup without damaging formation
- Used as a bridging agent in drill-in and completion fluids
- Available in fine, medium, and coarse grades for graduated bridging
- Compatible with both water-based and oil-based mud systems
- Density control without permanently damaging the producing zone
Dolomite Powder
Dolomite is used in oil-well drilling fluids as a weighting agent and lost-circulation material. Its higher density compared to calcite (2.85 g/cm³ vs. 2.71 g/cm³) makes it effective for increasing mud weight in challenging pressure environments.
- Weighting agent to control hydrostatic pressure in drilling fluids
- Higher density than calcite — effective at lower loading volumes
- Used as lost-circulation material in naturally fractured formations
- Compatible with freshwater and seawater mud systems
