Soapstone and talc are closely related — soapstone (steatite) is the massive form of talc (hydrated magnesium silicate). Both share the same chemical composition (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) but soapstone is denser and used for industrial grades, while purified talc is the standard in cosmetics and premium coatings.
